EMILY MONTGOMERY who had seen and heard the 1903 flights was one of the irritated women.
Never thought Iâd see them Wright brothers again. I figured theyâd be rich and famous by now and too good to associate with common folk like us. They did their flyinâ, and now our men folk is doing the talkinâ.
Mr. Wilbur and the lumber got here first with plans to repair their 1903 camp. Some folks around here had ripped off some of the siding to repair storm damage and had taken some of the stuff theyâd left behind. Donât say much for us now, does it?
When Mr. Orville showed up with more lumber and all the boxes and crates, our men was plumb excited to see what the Wrights was gonna do next. My man George said they had to do some more testing. All them governments wants âem to go higher and faster, stay in the air longer, and, would yâall believe this nonsense, carry a passenger. A passenger! What fool is going to want to ride that contraption? Whatâs gonna keep yâall on âem wingsâropes and chains? But our men hardly take time to eat a mealâespecially with all âem reporters with their cameras hanginâaround.
Theyâs even men here from New York City to watch these shenanigans. Theyâs cominâ out of the woodpiles, and fallinâ all over each other to come up with some tall tale. One of âem reported the Brothers flew ten or twenty miles back in 1903, that the life savers had their boats and safety stuff ready when the Wrights flew out over the water. Now, we women all know that didnât happen, but our men sure do enjoy makinâ up âem stories for âem Northerners.
But, itâs like I was tellinâ Addie Tate, the Wrights is different this trip. Oh, theyâs still polite, but theyâs always in a hurry. I figure theyâs hopinâ the reporters and the cameras wonât keep up with them. Wonât matter none, them reportersâll make up what they donât see.
The boys, theyâve noticed the difference, too. No singinâ, not much laughinâ or talkinâ down at the Wright camp. Theyâre downright disappointed. Well, the Brothers finally took that Furnas who came with âem on a flight. Looked like they was ready to prove to the rest of the country, maybe even the world, that they could fly.
But did the truth shut those reporters up? Maybe a little. But I got own plan to stop all this bragging and blabbing. I just told Mr. Montgomery there wouldnât be no grits and gravy on his breakfast plate if I saw one more mention of his name with one of âem wild stories.
One other little thing more that boils my blood. Them reporters never asked a single woman what happened that day in 1903. You better believe we was all a watchinâ from behind our curtains.
If all them tall tales is part of beinâ famous, well, they can just count me out. Iâd rather gather my eggs, cook my grits, and enjoy a sunset now and then.
